Mirapoint's Unrivaled Email Security Appliances Secure University of Massachusetts Computer Science Department Email
Award-Winning RazorGate Email Security Appliances Ensure Users Receive Important Email While Stopping Spam and Viruses at the Edge
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 2, 2005 — Mirapoint, the messaging experts, announced today that the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, Computer Science department has selected the Mirapoint RazorGate appliance to protect and secure their message network. The department chose the RazorGate appliance for its ease-of-use, flexibility, and comprehensive, multi-layered email security capabilities, including the unique MailHurdle™ technology that stops spam and viruses at the network edge. "The MailHurdle technology was a differentiating factor that set Mirapoint apart from the competition," commented Ken Kleiner, System Administrator for the Computer Science Department at University of Massachusetts, Lowell. "We tested the technology to see how well it performed and were impressed to see that it stopped over 60% of spam at the edge of the network. This meant we had 60% lower traffic load on the network that we didn't have to monitor, review, or worry about. We've also noted the RazorGate appliance's overall catch rate is consistently over 95%, which enables us to spend our time and resources on other areas of the network."
Prior to installing Mirapoint's RazorGate appliance, the Computer Science department was using another vendor's scanning appliance, which proved to be inflexible for filtering inbound email. The lack of flexibility resulted in the department's 1,800 users too often having their good email quarantined and in some cases even discarded with the unwanted email. The system administrator was then faced with spending time answering support calls from unhappy users looking for their critical email and then having to spend time on a 'seek and find' mission for the lost email.
"I know the concern is usually blocking unwanted email from users' inboxes, but second to that, and possibly more important, is the need to ensure that the expected and critical email gets to the users," said Kleiner. "We needed a solution that stopped the spam and viruses but that was flexible enough for us to modify to ensure our critical email was delivered to our users. We obviously made the right choice going with Mirapoint because the appliance was easy to implement and we haven't had one phone call regarding missing-critical emails since we turned it on."
Before selecting the RazorGate appliance, Kleiner, working with Blue Spruce Technologies - a security system integrator - researched and reviewed a separate software-only solution. At the conclusion of the comprehensive review process the team decided that only Mirapoint's RazorGate appliance met their criteria and would provide the best flexibility. Two other deciding factors for the team were the ease of deploying the appliance and the unique Mirapoint MailHurdle technology that blocks unwanted email at the edge, saving time and network resources.
"We understand that our customers' message networks are the critical communications backbone for their organizations," said Barry Ariko, President, Chairman and CEO of Mirapoint. "That is why Mirapoint has spent the last eight years using its expertise to build appliances that offer five nines reliability and multi-layered security to protect our customer's message networks. This expertise is crucial in higher education environments where the message network is tested on a daily basis, whether it is through overall message volume to downloading of suspicious material to preventing spam."
